Framing my foam base?

Hello all,

I am beginning to work on my first layout (N scale, 2'x6') that will use 2" foam as the base vs. plywood. I am trying to come up with a very thin wood that can be adhered to or framed around the foam as a nice finishing edge. Any thoughts on what I should be looking for?

I'd use BC or better grade plywood, 1/4" thick. It'll add both a finished edge around your smallish layout, and provide structural support and protection, and do so better than masonite.

How much money do you want to spend on the framing? Quarter inch plywood is available in oak (dark in color) and birch (light in color). You can dress up the edges with wood edge mouldings.

Visit your local supplier, and see what they have that looks good to you. Some choices are luan plywood, often used on hollow core doors, panelling, MDF, OSB, etc.

Masonite®, plastic, metal are also viable choices. Aluminum angle is quite inexpensive, and easy to work with for example.......

Thanks for all of the comments! I am thinking something 1/4" wouldn't be a bad way to go. It doesn't have to be the most beautiful finish of wood. I intend to paint it black to define the "stage."

You should maybe consider contacting a local sheetmetal fabricator. I use a small portable layout ,also made of insulboard ,2in. thick . Mine is 3X5 & my fabricator charged me 47 bucks .Ihave a 1/4 in bend at top &at bottom to insure rigidity . I will confess to some rough handling and so far absolutely no damage.
