This group has developed a Java model railroad interface that allows you to program decoders, build computer screen interlocking plants and more. here is the URL. Does anybody have any experience using these free programs?

No, but it looks very interesting and exciting. I need some kind of software to control my layout, and this may be the answer. I may have to develop a seperate module or two, because I am using Lionel's version of command control, but I have the codes for that. The panel builder and CMRI modules may be a direct fit with what I need.

I use JMRI with my Lenz system, mostly for programming decoders. It works great, particularly since you do not have to know what values to place in which CV's - just select an option from a user friendly drop down list. The software looks after the rest.

I've seen it on another layout to program CVs and I can never go back to command station programming again. We are currently implementing a PC/JMRI/LocoBuffer combination on my layout to talk to a Zephyr - about to test it some time in June I hope.

Also JMRI allows you to build excellent train or track control systems. later this year we will implement a panel to control the turnouts on the staging yard using JMRI with Digitrax DS54s controlling Tortoises. I chose the more expensive DS54s because I want a manual panel control too. (excellent review of stationary decoders on Tony's Trains).

then we will move on to automated control of trains in and out of staging, using JMRI, DCCODs and probably Digitrax transponding.

JMRI is awesome.
