Weathering MOW Equipment
Posted by jacon12 on Saturday, August 1, 2009 2:48 PM

I have some mow cars that are in need of weathering.  Right now they're in 'new from the shop' condition and that won't do.  I'd like to have some advice or suggestion on doing this.  Here's the equipment..

I'm thinking the deck (A in the photo below) of the car should be painted a more grimy black with oil stains here and there and maybe the toolboxes (B) should be painted a 'wood' color.  My guess is the step (C) is wood but maybe not, it may be metal.  I'm not sure what color to do the side (D) of the platform.

In the next picture of the boom etc. I'm thinking about weathering it with black chalk and adding rust color chalk at the bolts (A) and maybe paint the hinges on the door (B), then chalk weather the deck (C).

Any suggestions appreciated.

I'd gather some color photos of similar prototypes you are modeling or inspired by.  Then I'd disassemble the models into their major components.  Then spray-paint them in the color(s) following the prototype.  Then I'd apply appropriate decals after preparing the model's surfaces as instructed.  Then apply appropriate weathering effects noted from the prototype photos (dirt, grease, rust, etc.)

P.S. -- Nice looking railroad.
