Results Follow Up on Avery Clear Labels

Many thanks to those who responded to my question on the labels. I purchased a 300 label pack at  Wal Mart for about $ 8.00. The Avery item number is 18660 and specifies "ink jet" on the cover. These are standard return address sized mailing labels, 30 to a sheet,with a matte finish. The plastic sheet thickness (mil ?) is not given, but it is very thin- perhaps 2x as compared to decal material.

I printed one label and trial-sized my text on a plain sheet of paper first, then printed one label of the sheet. I peeled the label, so I can still use the 29 remaining labels. Instead of worrying about font size, I printed in MS Paint, then copied the text image onto the label in Wordperfect (or Word), reducing the image or enlarging it for best fit (on the sign, not the label itself). Printing instructions for Word are in the package and in Wordperfect, use the label template option to find Avery Template 5160.

The matte finish appears to handle the ink well- but I let it sit for a few minutes for safety.

Given that the label is matte, this is probably not a good for window signage, but against a solid flat backround, the matte works well in my opinion. Adhesion is fairly strong- as these labels are designed for use on mailed envelopes or file tabs.

Based on this experience, I am satisfied with the results- hope this helps other RR modelers.

I would really like to see a photograph.  Also I think if you spray with dulcoat to fix or weather the ink will run.  Don't know for sure.

I would be happy to post a photo of the Avery matte label - if only I could figure out how to attach or include a jpeg image on these postings!

 Since I'm over 50, could someone walk me thru that process?

The dullcoat idea is a good one- I did that after reading the reply to my post!

Dullcoat or any sealer spray shouldn't hurt the ink or make it run.

Water however (especially wet water) is likely to cause the ink to run (at least it does on Avery white address labels).

How to post photos is a Frequently Asked Question around here.  If you put "photo" and "post" into the "Search Community" box it will retrieve a number of how to threads. 

   Here is the overview.  Trains.com does not accept photos at all.  You have to upload your photos to some OTHER internet site and put a link (a pointer) to the other site inside your post.  Photobucket.com is a free photo posting site that I use.
