 My original track plan has seriously outlived its usefulness.  While I have built several sections of it, and have connected those sections with some temporary trackage to make it operational, I have discovered a number of shortcomings.  Some are just a minor nuisance, while others are quite glaring... especially in regards to staging.

So...

I doodled this today, while thinking about how to address a couple of the bottle necks on the layout.  





I'm figuring I can build the upper level using hollow core doors and shelf brackets, which should be plenty stable, and only have a depth of 1-3/8".  A simple 2" strip at the front edge can provide a valance for lighting.  I've decided that the yard I have is the yard I'm going to have for the foreseeable future, but I think I can modify the east end to make it a little more efficient...  But don't look here...  I haven't figured it out just yet.

I also wanted to add more operational interest to the east end, so I'm using the peninsula to house the Lehigh Cement plant in Union Bridge on the main level (and also to conceal a one turn helix to gain elevation for the yard), and Elkins shops and a return loop on the top deck.

The grade to Elkins is backward vis a vis the prototype, but that probably can't be avoided.  I also wanted to do this without a helix, so the Thomas Sub picks up some running room to rise 12" above Maryland Jct.  This works out pretty well, overall.  Thoughts?  Suggestions?

There's probably some grade and clearance issues that will have to be engineered, but operationally, at least, this is a perfectly functional plan.
