Here is the NMRA's page on recommended minimums http://www.nmra.org/standards/sandrp/rp-11.html For an HO 40' car they recommend 14". I have gotten HO 40' cars to go around a 12" curve, but I don't recommend it.

the fulcrum that is supplied with the machine, will it create more tension on the switch points when it is higher on the slide rails or lower. or does it even make a difference?
