Hi John,

I'll hlep you out by sending you over to the right forum - http://cs.trains.com/trccs/forums/11.aspx

We garden railroaders don't get into much HO though there is a bit of On30 and Gn15 around (both on HO gauge track).

I would suggest that you first determine the amount of space you have available for your layout. Then decide what type of structures that want. What ratio of structures/scenery do you want? What are the "must have's" for your layout. Then once knowing these things along with era, season, you can have a better sence of what you are really after.

Any track plan can be landscaped in Western theme with appropriate scenery, buildings etc.

101 Track Plans published by Kalmbach has some plans that show a Western theme.

While there have been several beginners layout series in Model Railroader, I don't recall any with a Western theme.

One thing to realize is that there is a big difference between Western as in the "Old West" of cowboy shows/movies and Western as of today.

Enjoy

Paul

If you're having fun, you're doing it the right way.

Old west as in coyboys & cattle drives? Texas, Kansas,  or western as in Route-66  Oklahoma to California? The great northwest with the lumber & ocean ports?
