Converting N Scale Couplers
Posted by Montana Railfan on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 12:29 PM

Good morning all,

Quick question, im looking to convert my fleet to full Knuckle couplers instead of Rapido, some models (Lifelike SD9) have the couple hidden (or what looks like hidden) inside the model. Any advice on converting in general?

Thank you

Here is a link to the Micro Trains conversion chart:

Just look up the equipment you want to convert.  Some conversions are easier than others.  Some are simple swap-out old for new, others require some modification and/or disassembly.  If you still have them, directions for disassembly should have been included with the loco.

If you run iinto anything that needs clarification, post a question here.  There are many modelers here with great experience in off-the-wall conversions.

I've converted a couple LL SD9's to MT's and they are pretty easy.  They have body mounted couplers, and if you purchase the pre-assembled MT 1015-1, it's even easier.

The old Rapido coupler is held in place with a clip and (I think) a copper strip.  Save the clip and discard the copper strip.  The new MT coupler then slides into the pocket and is held in place with the clip.

Hope this helps.
