New Layout Needs help
Posted by SMassey on Sunday, March 29, 2009 2:33 AM

Hey everyone,  I finally got approval from the land commission and my financial institution (ie. Wife)  to build a new layout.  I prefer a loop that has some switching, so if I want I can just set the turnouts and zone out while my trains go round and round.  I dont get to do that this time.  I just simply dont have the room.  So I am building an "L" switching layout that has the longer leg of the "L" as removable modules forming a small yard and diesel service facility.  Below is a picture of the layout that I have designed so far but I dont really know how to proceed.  The blue boxes are industries and I have 3 so far.  I would like to have one or two more but at the same time I dont want the place to look too crowded. (I am kinda getting there as it is.  Any ideas on how to improve the flow, make the layout function better, or just some ideas to help me finish what I have started.

The footprint of the layout is pretty solid.  I could maybe get another foot out of the north west end.  The southern parts are 2, 4' modules that will always work together. The modules are backwards on this layout but will face the "normal" way when displayed with other modules.  The layout will be DCC using at least 2 power districts. (my PM 42 currently is wired for 3 power districts and one reversing loop).  My freight will mainly be 50' box cars and maybe some flats with wood (40' or 50').  I have not decided on the industries as of yet but I was thinking about putting a barrel factory, warehouse, maybe a small saw mill (to supply the wood for the barrels).  OK Sorry for the long read but I was hoping to give you all some idea of what I was trying to accomplish here.

 Hi there,

with a room of 11´ by 7´ for an L-shaped layout, you have got plenty of room to come up with something proper. Try to avoid putting to much track into it - you will want to have some room for structures, streets and abit of scenery.

There are many proposals for shelf-type layouts in the MR track plan database - check them. In May MR will also ship it´s new book on shelf layouts - may be worthwile getting.
