Trees
Posted by traindaddy1 on Saturday, March 28, 2009 10:33 AM

I have been looking through my latest catalog from "Scenic Express" mainly for trees. ( "O" )

I need quite a few.  OUCH!

Any suggestions for retailers whose prices are extremely reasonable would certainly be appreciated.

Many thanks.

Here you can purchase bulk orders of an entire forest that look great and can be used for background trees as well.

A few trees up front near the viewer can be found here. These are the best I've seen and if just a few will do, they may be worth it to you...

I think it was Dave Frary that once said he's never seen a layout with too many trees on it...

At present I am in the process of constructing 300-400 HO deciduous trees. I personally, like to use cheap furnace filters, that are torn into two layers and then spray painted, green or flat black. I then cut the filters into strips, and then cut the strips into rough circles of 1"-1 1/2 " diam. For O scale trees, you would probably use full length or half length wooden skewers,(or dowels), sharpened on both ends (and stained bark color, for the trunks). I push about 5 circles onto the skewers and then spray with adhesive. I then sprinkle on finely ground up green or Fall colored Woodland Scenic foam. The sharpened points are then pushed into predrilled holes, since I change the color of the forest with the season, I do not glue trees in place. Weeds with multi-branches are used only for the foreground trees. Commercial trees are far too expensive, when you are using hundreds of trees.  Bob Hahn

Bob:  Thanks for your note.  Sounds like you really know what you are doing. I just might give it a whirl.

Bob, could you post a photo of your trees? Sounds like a neat idea!
