What I was trying to say was with the 4x8 I could walk around 3 sides (2 long sides 1 short side). The 6x8 the reason I came here was the best thing I could come up with was 4 1x6 sectons bolted together in a rectangle and a double loop around it.
Your gonna get real tired of trying to reach that far corner on the bigger one.
Been Nothing Since Frisco (BNSF) I am wanting to sise up to a bit bigger layout and right now I have a 4'x5'4" layout. I have narrowed it down to either a 4x8 or a 6x8. On the 6x8 it would go up aginst 2 walls were the 4x8 would go up agints only one. Min. radius 22 or 24". Don't sugest a woodland scenics layout kit I can not aford one of those! Note I model HO scale.
You will have a very tough time reaching the whole layout if it is 6 feet wide and 8 feet long and you can only reach in from two sides. The 4x8 wil be pretty difficult as well.
I would use the larger of the two, although I might suggest you make the track plan simple and sized more for the smaller dimension table. That leaves lots of room for scenery, sidings and plenty of room to move the layout. You'd be amazed how much better a layout can look if you make it uneven with the sides of the table, perhaps across the diagonal. Even a few inches will change the look dramatically.
