View layout by video camera on flatcar
Posted by CSX1967 on Monday, February 16, 2009 12:44 PM

Hi All,

I am new to this forum, I just finished covering the last bit of space on my layout. I bought a wirless camera and mounted it on a flatcar to see how realalistic the layout looked from an engineers view. Please go to youtube and type Pauls n scale and take a look. Feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks

I like the video. I've always thought that designing a layout for train-level viewing requires a different approach than for normal operations (which are more "bird's-eye"). Your video shows just how well a video can work, as well as considerations that need to be taken into account. The huge giants that show up from time to time, and the benchwork, etc. detract from the view. Also, the tight curves, but those would be difficult in any case. :-) And I don't want to simply criticize. It was a great video, and I liked the ride through the cuts, and watching the mountains in the distance, and the cars on the road. Very nice. And they bring out a whole new perspective to your creation. I am betting that watching it has even given you some great ideas. ;-)

How about doing it again, with the train running slower. When it went around curves, I felt like I was at Magic Mountain.. made me dizzy.. Other than that, it was pretty cool. When I bought my mini-cam, my fiancée thought I bought it to hide in the A/C vent in the bedroom. I NEVER even thought of THAT!

Would be much nicer if the trains were running a little slower, I was getting motion sickness.

A new spin on an old idea, any of you other old timers remember this see the link below. I had one and dad threw it away, said I was too old to be playing with toy trains any more. I just sent it to hiim with a note saying check out the price.

Just my 2 cents worth, I spent the rest on trains. If you choked a Smurf what color would he turn?

This kind of video graphically illustrates the need for spiral easements into curves.

A real enjoyable video and the scenes were also impressive. How about a sequel with the flat car bringing up the rear and showing us where we have been??

Very cool video, you have a really nice layout, I felt like I was on the train myself!!

How big is your layout, it seems to go on forever.  It makes us S guys look for more space to build on!

Thanks for sharing,

George

Hi George,

My layout is in a room about 10X14, it has a door on both ends. one door is the entry door and the other goes to a utility area where I have setup a small shop to work on layout and train parts.

Have a great day, Paul West
