Installing Remote Turnout

I recently installed an Atlas remote turnout; wired the turnout to the switch; connected ( I thought) the switch to the adjacent switch and the turnout did not operate. I checked the wiring, tried the turnout on another switch and it would work. Finally, after much frustration and time, I took another look at the connection of the two switches and found that I had hooked up only one of the two connections. I am having trouble wondering how I could miss something so simple and what should have been so obvious. Anyone else ever has such an annoying experience.
