tortise question
Posted by bunker45 on Thursday, January 1, 2009 5:30 PM

I am needing to lengthen the wire that runs off the machine to switch the rails.  Any one

have any recomendations where to pick up the wire and wire size?  Is this something that

is fairly common?  would the local Ace hardware carry something like this?

thanks

 Chuck,

I just finished installing several Tortii a couple of days ago.  The supplied wire is 0.025" diameter.  K&S Engineering produces what is commonly referred to as piano wire (very tough stuff) the next two sizes (if I recall correctly) are 0.032 and 0.039.  My wires had to go through 1.375" of subroadbed, roadbed, etc.  I found the 0.032 size works well.  You should be able to find K&S products at your local hobby shop, particularly ones that specialize in RC stuff.  And maybe your local Ace Hardware will have some or equivalent.

 Good luck.

I got some piano wire from a piano tuner I knew, but the local hardware had it as well. I have found that a little larger wire worked better in many applications. I did find that I had to enlarge the hole in the tortise a little.

If you think you have it right, your standards are too low. my photos http://s12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/ARTHILL/ Art

Do not use a track cutter for cutting piano wire.  It will ruin the track cutter cutting edge. Purchase a cutter designed, specifically, for cutting piano wire. I purchased mine from my hobby shop, but one can be purchased at any hardware store.     Bob Hahn
