Cesar, please read this post (see link in blue font at bottom).  Also, notice to the right you'll find "Search Community" immediately above the largest advertisement at right.                            ---------->>>>>>>>

Just compose an appropriate syntax, such as "How to post pictures" and then click on search.  You should find lots of threads on that and on other subjects.  It is often a good start when wondering what to do as this forum has a long history with many threads on the same restricted range of most popular topics.

Enjoy!

Cesar, I my self have used paper mock up of buildings, cheap and gives you a idea of what you are trying to do. Like my first try, very child like but still fun. Main thing is it is a start! Please don't take it the wrong way either, here is my first layout.

Only way I could say mine was better is the fact I have green under the track and you could not see all the wires.

With the help from the kind people here I gotten much better in the three years I have been doing this.

My current work, and I will add not much harder than what I did earlier on. With the help this site will give you it will seem like child's play, just takes a little time to do but easy.

You all so asked about flex track a few days ago. All of the new bench section is Atlas Code 100 flex track, not counting the turnouts.

Main thing is to have fun, ask questions and learn. Oh, better pictures would be great. We have all posted a few poor pictures.

Looking forward to you next question.

Thanks for the pics. You did a nice job with the structures.

That brought back memories of my first Tyco trains set I got back in '69. It had brass track which I nailed directly onto an old dinning table in the garage and included painted roads, home made cardboard structures, and trees made from carpet fibers and twigs. And I enjoyed that thing to death.

Ah, memories.

That layout ceased to exist that year, i lost the trains doing a school homework.  I have only some signs and figures of that layout.  I have to buy all that again.  People here back then and todays dont know about the world of trains, they only think that they run around xmas tree.

Many things have changed now.  My new layout will be L shape too 2 levels, whit a line in the rear going up to the second lvl, im still figuring the calculations for that.  I have made a quote, almost 5000$.  I have work now, but lol, the thing will suck all my money.

I plan to do the lower lvl first, lay all track and switches, connections to have one train running at least using the power packs that I have.  Then by the time I will add trees, grass, buildings, KFC!!!!!!!!!!!  Many things have been discontinued!!! a sad thing though...  This will take like 2 or 3 years lol.

What are the correct switches for atlas turn outs??? cant find anything clear at their site.  Only something under the table.  But i dont have 4 feet long arms!!!.

Im late for work!!

Thanks Cuda Ken!!

Ceaser,

You can use almost any type switch machine to switch the Atlas turnouts.  I have been using Tortoise machines for the turnouts that are a stregth to get to and Caboose Industries ground trows for all yard and siding turnouts.

It realy is up to you which one to use.  Atlas makes twin coil switch machines that attach to their track but can burn out easily if you press against the button too long.

There is also a company called Hump Yard Purveyance that uses a cable to throw the turnout.  They are about $10 each and work very well.

I entered the Hump Yard site, seen using cables made me think an idea Cool.  When I finally get the switches i will test it.

 Thanks for your time Bill!

Caesar, How much room do you have to work with? I started with a L shape against the wall as you saw in the picture. It is 4 foot wide which is to wide to work on with comfort, now being 26 years old you may not mind laying on your stomach.

If you are going to run a loop and the bench is 4 foot wide, it cuts your turns down to 18 to 20 inch radius. Many will tell you, you cannot run big engines on 18 inch turns. I am not one of them, I have ran big engines on tight turns with no real problems. Problems I did have was before I where before I learned how to lay track right. At first I was just happy to keep the trains on the rails. Now I find the bigger rolling stock and engines look bad going around 18 inch turns.

I have found most cars and engine look good going around a 24 inch turn. If you add 4 inch to either side for details and just in case something comes off the rails that is 56 inch. I have a section like that and is a pain to work on unless it is free standing.

Here is a few pictures to get you thinking before you build.

Reason I like the donut style is you can have big sweeping turns. My next bench will have 3 main lines, will be 36 wide. I have been playing with a track program I should be able to have 36, 32 and 28 inch turns and still have room for detail work.

I hope Selector does not mind me posting a picture of his great bench. His is the best example to show you don't have to have unlimited spaces to have a great bench!

Far as the $5000.00, that does not shock me now! My latest section that is only 5 X 9.5 foot has cost me $1000.00 at last count! I stopped count at that point.Approve That is not counting rolling stock.

Very preety, what program is that?  Im using the demo of CadRail9, only can design the tracks, is just fine.  Now that i mada my first table i can appreciate more the dimensions.

I will post a few pics of what I have here lol!!!  I would use all my room for the layout, but i will need to sleep whit the trains lol!!!

Glad you are still around and thinking. Far as the pictures I posted, I got them off the internet. Looking forward to seeing where you are now! Pictures date shows 2005 so I am guessing they are not your current bench work.
