XTrak CAD question
Posted by SF Bill on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 2:45 PM

I have just moved and am considering a new design for a layout.  My dilemma: I had used XTrak and have  a design which I wish to remove from my "drawing board", but I cannot find a way to remove the previous drawing.  Can anyone give me a hint, or a whole answer on how top do??

XtrcCad - I think you just have to open a new file..... then select the file you want.

Thanks for the reply.  I thought might be the answer, but whenever I do open the program again, the original drawing is still there!  Again, thanks, and I'll keep working on it.

If you don't exit the old file before you close it, it will reappear. Just click open a new file and it will disappear.

Ya, everytime I open the program it starts with a "clean slate".  No biggie, I just load the one I want to work on.

Space Mouse, et al:  Many thanks for the replies, vut I am still stumped.  I went to my XTrak program, clicked on the "file" button, chose "new tab" and the old drawing is still there.  I have opened the program many times and never get a brand new clean "sheet" to work with.  I must be doing something wrong (that is nothing new) or my computer set up is in conflict with something.  I am using Win XP, on a wireless connection to my son's computer downstairs, on Cox cable network.  Any more ideas that I can try?

Bill,

What version of XtrkCad are you using?

Not sure if you are aware that there is a yahoo group for XtrkCad.  In the event "we" cannot help you with your issue perhaps someone there could?

If you are not using version 4.0.2 then you should download the latest version of the program here.

Have you tried pushing CTRL+N to open a new file? Or perhaps going to Edit -> select all, and deleting what you have drawn? Also, one thing I have done to avoid drawing the many obstacles in my room over, was set up the space, draw in my obstacles, and saved that under the name "Basement Template" so any time I want to start a new plan for my model RR, I can simply load that and be on my way.

Hi again:  Sorry to keep harping on this subject so much, but nothing is working properly.  I even uninstalled the previous version of XTrak and redownloaded the latest v. When I opened the program, the same drawing appeared.  I will re-uninstall it and leave it alone untilI can get to a perm location, then try to d/ld it again and see what it does.  Many, many thanks to all who tried to help, I really appreciate it.

Wish thaat I had that problem.  Mine always opens with a blank sheet which I have to close and go to 'file' and select the plan I want to use. Ver. 4.0.2

Very strange.  I'm using version 4.02 and the program opens to a clean slate every time.  I go to the file menu and choose the last drawing I worked on from the list of recent drawings at the bottom of the file menu or I choose open and navigate to where the plan is and the plan I select opens.  There is no need for me to close a blank plan to open the one I want.  When I go file-new the existing plan is replaced by a clean slate.

The only thing I find the same with every start is the layout dimensions for the blank plan are the same unless I go to options-layout and change the dimensions of the plan.

It's starting to sound like you fellows have Gremlins or are using VISTA...EEEK!  Under Vista anything and/or everything could be broken, IMO. Wink

It will be interesting to hear how this plays out.

The behavior you describe is what you would normally get if you instead of clicking a shortcut leading to the program (e.g. "C:\Program Files\XTrkCAD4\xtrkcad.exe") clicks on a shortcut that leads to the xtc file containing your first layout plan. The the normal windows file association in registry would look up .xtc, decide you need XtrakCad and start Xtrakcad - and automatically load the layout file you clicked on.

I would start by checking that you are starting the exe file, not loading the .xtc file.

What icon do you click on to start the program ? What is behind that icon ? Right click on icon - select properties - look at the line "target".

BlueHillsCPR, I tried it and your method works.  I had not tried that way but assumed - we all know what that means - that I had to get rid of the blank sheet.  Thanks for the tip.        FYI: XP Home.

Stein:  I've reinstalled this darned program at  least three times now, and geet the same results each tiome--it shows up with the same written diagram.  I've also used every suggestion give me, with no positive results.  Im using Windows XP.  When I first installed it, in NC, I had to do it more than once but eventually, it worked.  I'm in AZ now, on a wireless conn on Cox cable network and I am bebinning to think that is the problem.  It also seems likely that I will be returning to NC and will try it

All nice and well, but you did not actually reply to my questions - what icon do you click on to start the program - and what is behind that icon (right click, chose properties, make a note of what is written under "target")?

It won't help one to reinstall the program if the icon refers to the layout file instead of to the program. You just get the same behavior the next time you install the program.

Wireless or not should have no influence whatsoever. This is a program that reads a file on your local disk and displays it on your local screen - to the best of my knowledge it does not communicate with anything over the internet to do so.

I again suggest you describe in detail how you start the program, and that you check what it says behind the icon you use to start the program. If target ends in ".exe" it is probably right. If it ends in ".xtc" then that explains what you have done and why you are getting this behavior.

1.  Right click on the desktop Icon.

2.  Select "Properties"

3.  Select the "Shortcut" tab

4.  Target: "C:\Program Files\XTrkCAD4\xtrkcad.exe"

Step four is the key to what we are asking you to verify.

Good Morning:Still no proper responses from the XTRKCAD program, it must not have installed itself, as I don't have an icon for it anywhere but in the list of program files, and if I click on it, I get X v.4.0.2 and the danged image is still from the original drawing, which is what I am trying eliminate.  I am getting the usual computer gobbleygook and circlular path leading back to start.  Due to the conditions describer earlier, I suspect the installation is faulted in my location. Therefore, I have uninstalled it again and when I and my wife are in a house alone I will get the fiber optic cable installation direct to only my machine and get it another go!  I don't need the program until I get a new house in order to have the dimensions of my space.  Many thanks again to all who took the time participate.
