Walthers turn table in 2" extruded foam?
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, March 30, 2004 8:12 AM
hey guys, need some more advice. im getting ready to mount a Walthers 90' turn table on my layout. i've seen the posts regarding the Walthers tt, and honestly, its got me scared. seems like theres a lot of issues with the tt. anyways, its all that my budget would allow at this time so i guess i need to make the best of it. any ideas on mounting it in 2" styrofoam? anyone ever seen this done? will it be sturdy? also, if someone has experience with the Walthers tt, please e mail me, ive never attempted anything like this before and my wireing skills arent the best. maybe if i can get some help before i start assembly, it wont be too bad......ha! ha! anyways, thanks for your time and help!

I mounted one of those Walthers turntables in foam and had problems with noise reverbration, which was made even worse by the foam acting as an amplifier. The turntable is very noisy no matter how you mount it, and there is so much free play in the gearing that it is nearly impossible to align the tracks properly. I eventually wound up using an Atlas turntable and moving the Walthers to an off-layout make up yard area where it is turned by hand instead of trying to use the motor. Even in this configuration, it is seldom used because there is so much wobble in it.

thanks for the fast response guys. cacole, so basically what your saying is that im sunk eigther way? is there any way of salvageing this project? any modifications that dont require me to have a degree in physics or something? i looked forward to haveing a nice turn table, now its looking not so good. does anyone know if its possible to modify it with a atlas indexed turn table useing extruded foam? how could a person attach both tt's to foam sub road bed?maybe a piece of 1/8" luan or plywood, then recess it into the foam? im not sure, im no engineer[B)] anyways, if anyone has any ideas, please let me know. thanks again!

Hi Steve
I have a Heljan TT mounted in 2" foam board with no problems with noise or vibrations. I believe the Walthers kit was made by Heljan because the use the same drive.
The roundhouse and turntable are all on one 4' x 4' sheet mounted on 1/4 plywood. If I was to do it over again, I wouldn't have used the plywood because it warps when you apply the glue. I think I could have used 1 x 4 boards on the underside for attachment points.
I connected my drive differently than the instructions show.
E-mail me and I'll send you some photos.
