BlueHillsCPR dehusmanI just went into the profile and turned off the Avatars on my view so none of them show. Ahh yes, but we still see your gray image.

You'll have to take that up with Kalmbach, that is poor design of the website. It REQUIRES an avatar. You HAVE to have an avatar and if you don't choose one they provide a witness protection avatar for you. On every other forum I belong to, the default is NO avatar and then you add one if you want.
I personally think they are a waste of bandwidth, so I choose not to use one. Unfortunately on the Trains.com forum NOT having an avatar isn't an option.

HarryHotspur For some reason mine turned out a little squished, but it's better than the default silhouette. I suppose.

Probably because your file is too small to begin with. Did you resize it, and if so, to what size. The one I have at left is 30kbytes.

Correct, you don't need to upload an image to a host website for the avatar image. What I do is use a photo-manipulating software to reduce the image to under 30kbytes and then simply browse to that tiny image on my computer. Kalmbach's server will dutifully retrieve it and paste it here for you.

I put the one into my posts without it being on another host site, I just linked to it on my hard drive while I was in the AVATAR area of the profile editing, and it was uploaded to Kalmbach's server..
I have noticed that many of you have replaced the shadow head AVATAR with your own choice of picture, AVATAR, but there are still many who have not. The procedure goes something like this.
You must have a digital picture "HOSTED" in eg. "Photobucket.com".
Click on the image (with Title) ,that you desire to use for your AVATAR:, and it will have a light blue frame.
Below the image are four options. Click on the IMG option, and the word "Copied" will appear momentarily.
Now go back to the Model Trains Forums page. In the right column iss the boxed title "My Profile"
Click on "Update Profile "
Click on "Edit Profile"
Click on "Yes" to enable Avatar option.
Click on "Browse" option to Upload Avatar
Either fill in the "File Name", or click pn the arrow to get a list of the images with the same File Name.
Click on the desired image and it gets a blue frame.
Finally click on "Open".\, and the computer will assure you that your properly sized AVATAR will "soon" appear on all Replies or Created Threads. It may take a few minutes. That's it !
