Simply put, a reversing loop is a loop of track that comes around back onto itself and allows a train to change direction. Here's a picture of a reversing loop that I found on the Internet: (Ignore the labels)
Unfortunately, this same reversing loop creates an electrical short. So, it needs a switch - either a manual or an automatic one - to reverse the polarity of the rails inside the loop before the train goes back through the turnout.
