HO 50"s era I scratch built this small depot during the last month for a small place I had to fill on the layout. No plans. just out of my head. like building that way.

The above is my opinion, from an active and experienced Model Railroader in N scale and HO since 1961.
(Modeling Freelance, Eastern US, HO scale, in 1962, with NCE DCC for locomotive control and a stand alone LocoNet for block detection and signals.) http://waynes-trains.com/ at home, and N scale at the Club.
Its tall narrow shape looks to me like an old chair works (work done on the first floor, wood stored in the loft) perhaps converted to cabinet making, millwork, or modest warehousing/storage by the 1950s.

I'm not sure I get it. You say it's a freight building, but the sign on the left side of the building says "Golden Valley Canning Company"
Which is it? A freight house or an industry?
You must get a heckuva lot of snow there to need 18" or 24" square rafters.

What ever it is, had fun building it!
Wow Don,
Very well done, and scratch built you say, that is even better, nice talent you have there, any pics of others you have built?
keep up the good work.
Thanks for the nice comment, Red Horse! Yes, I do have some more scratch built buildings.
Don,
Scratchbuilding is an art that comes with experience, and it looks like you have an excellent future in this area. I do agree that as a freighthouse it should more likely be one story and have more prototypically sized rafters (and maybe some dullcoat on the roof), but thats just some advice (IMHO) of course.
A year ago I started to build an HO replica of my Grandmom's house in Anna, Illinois - from which porch I watched the IC trains in the 1950s. It is a simple 4 room, hip rafter house, buried somewhat in the side of a hill - but took a whole lot of time, patience, and wherewithall to "get it right". But, I'm happy with the end result, and one of the best things I got from the process is "experience" - which will surely serve me to build a better model the next time around.
So ENJOY, and "Good Job" !!!!!
