That may be but you have to realize that what you do get allows you to start a basic layout. And when you consider that no one wants to build the same layout everyone else may be building, you see why all you get is what you need to start.
Overpriced they may be, but when you consider what you would have to do on your own, it may not be that overpriced after all. And one must consider what skills and equipment one has or does not have. Also add in the fact that one can not only get a layout to the point where you can actually run trains that much faster as well.
I am not trying to produce the mother of all layouts. I have neither the skill, tools or the desire to do that. I do want something that will fill my train room and give me the satisfaction of running my N-Scale equipment in an appropriate setting and get it done before I get much older.

Are you talking about the Mod-U-Rail system? I use them and plan to construct virtually my entire layout with them. I could use plywood but that would create alot of sawdust and other garbage I don't want it my home. Besdies these modules will do the job I need done without any need for massively heavy structures that require alot on construction knowledge and power tools.
All you need to put the Mod-U-Rail modules to gether is a screw driver, some foam cutting tools and Elmer's glue.
Before I made the decision to build the layout this way, I bought a strait and a corner module and the stands that Woodland Scenics makes for these modules. I've put together the stands and partially constructed the straight module. I goes togeth pretty quickly and the foam Woodland scenics uses is easy to cut and doesn't leave a big mess. It's good stuff and pretty sturdy. My layout is in N-Scale and the dimensions are just perfect for that. Of course, it can be used by HO scalers too, but I don't see why it can't be used for O either.
