Put them in a jar and take them to an exterminator and ask. That way you don't get the whole "your home is gonna be destroyed by bugs!" sales pitch the exterminator will give you when you let him into your home. You can then get chemicals and advice from this place.

Here's a bunch of bug ID sites.

The Layout is in a old bedroom in the basement. The bugs are just appearing in the layout area. By there color I don't think there wood borers...

They may be wood borers that came out of the framing you used to build the benchwork.  To be sure, you should call in an exterminator instead of trying to guess what they are and then find out too late that they are a variety of termite that have infested your entire house.

It's best to get them now instead of having to pay thousands to have the whole house treated.

Hi!

Where is your layout located?  If its in a garage or "not so finished" basement, then its time to go to Lowes (or whatever) and get some really good household sprays and work the area around the layout and lightly on the infested area on the layout.

If the layout is inside the house, then I would attempt to find if the bugs are specific to an area of the layout or if they are also in the house (i.e. baseboards, carpets, etc).

Also, did you use anything on the layout that could have brought in bugs or eggs?  Stuff like soil and groundcover that may have gotten exposed to bugs could easily come to life on the layout.

What you describe does not sound like termites, which tend to be longer (1/4 to 3/8 inch) and slender.  Trust me, anything other than termites is better.

I need too figure out what they are, and if they are termites I might need to check around the entire house, but they only appear to be in the room with  the layout. What ever they are, I need a treament that would be safe for pets and the layout itself.

I almost miss when an occasional hitch hiking spider in one of my freight cars was the worse problem...

Having bugs of any kind on the layout isn't a good thing. Time to get the bug bombs out.

Possible Insect Problem...
Posted by conrail92 on Sunday, July 20, 2008 7:38 AM

The other day I was cleaning up around my Layout and I noticed ontop of the layout (still just styrofoam) Little insects that appeared a very light yellow, I thought they might be termites. I googled termites to get an image of them. They appear to be a close match but not exactly, the insects where the right color but they had one oval shape body and a small head. Termites appear to be long and more slender then what I saw and the insects I saw don't have ridges like a termite. They also appear smaller then a termite, they look  to be about 1/2 or 1/3 the size of a normal small black ant. I never seen a termite in person so I'm not sure what too think, There's not a lot of them I only saw maybe about 5 or 6.

Anyone have any idea's what they might be and If they are termites how I could deal with them?
