color of Sagebrush ground foam
Posted by NevinW on Thursday, June 19, 2008 1:30 PM
I model the Nevada desert.  Out here, the sagebrush is a pale blue/grey green color that doesn't seem to match all of the usual commercial green ground foams, which are just too green.  Does anyone make a ground form color that looks like Nevada sagebrush?  Thoughts?  -  Nevin

Although I've been looking for a while I haven't seen any that have the same color as our dear artemesia tridentia. I basically figured that I would eventually have to color my own in some fashion. However, I have noticed that at a distance it really is a blue green that I have seen in wood land scenics foam

What part of the State are you modeling? and what scale?

I model the Tonopah and Tidewater RR and the Bullfrog Goldfield in HO.  The actual layout is the Lila C branch from Death Valley Junction to the Borax mine with a few alterations attibuted to modeler's license.  I plan on building a few Las Vegas and Tonopah RR cars eventually.  A few V&T cars show up too.  Tell me about your modeling.  We both live in Reno.  -  Nevin

N scale in the garage, G scale in the backyard for the wife and the fish. The G scale is named Rock Gap and Pine Ridge (seeing the town of Rock Ridge was already taken). It's run in the summer time basically for fun.

The more serious layout is in the garage, and is a freelanced railroad based on a railroad from Palisade Nevada, through Tonopah and Goldfield, and out of the southern part of the state via the route taken by the T&T.  I am modeling the northern section, from Palisade to Tonopah, using the WP as the "primary" prototype. Due to issues, a lot of construction has not occurred over the last several summers but I hope to finish track this summer and start scenery.

From my time working in Beatty, I didn't think enough sagebrush grew near the Lila C to worry about.Wink [;)]

Your point about the lack of sagebrush and vegetation down there is well taken.  There are some sagebrush-like plants and some larger shrub-like plants around DVJ.  the all seem to have that pale blue-green color though.

Send me a PM when you get the chance.  -  Nevin

Nevin,

I suggest you take a look at the Timberline Scenery website:  http://timberlinescenery.com/xcart/home.php?cat=1.

I use their "lost canyon sage" and "sage brush blue" (usually as a mix) for sage ground cover on my layout depicting northern New Mexico.  The gray-blue color is quite good (especially on the lost canyon sage).  The sage brush blue is a little grayer and allows me to tone the effect down.

Here's a picture of how I have used it on my layout.

Notice the sage along the embankments.  Hope this helps.

Here's another company with some non-standard colors.

I use faux fur and pastels to represent sagebrush:

If you use different pastels it changes the color at:
