Hi West Penn,

Thanks for the words of encouragement, I really do appreciate it. Wow, a 38x70 foot space for a layout! My space is probably no more than 1/3 of that size. Still, it is a lot of work no matter the space available. In any case, I've been doing a little "here 'n there" and that's been helping insofar as to at least give me a visual that progress is still being made.

I'm sure once colder weather sets in the basement is going to look a lot more inviting than the outside world so, with hope, perhaps I will post some pics later in the year.

Thanks again for your support! Have a great 4th of July weekend!

I'm in Glenville PA.  What exactly is the problem?  If it is just feeling overwhelmed join the club.  My latest adventure is filling a 38' x 70' basement with a mushroom style layout.  Just keep plugging at it and eventually it will get there.

You must have a general idea of a track plan to have started benchwork.  That is all the more I have at the moment.  I start with a general track plan designed around where I want to walk and build the benchwork.  Then as the benchwork goes up I cover it with cardboard and start playing with track arangements and buildings I want.  This is when I generally assign a principal industry.  Once I have the track plan more defined I use the cardboard as a template to cut the roadbed.  Then it is just a matter of building all the buildings and doing the scenery.  Sounds simple doesn't it.  Well that's how most of what you read makes it seem.  It is a lot of work and most will not be seen or appreciated by visitors.  True modelers know how much work there is to getting an operational layout so just keep going.

Hi,

Thanks for the invite. The entire week, and this weekend, has been somewhat chaotic so I won't be able to make it to VA. Perhaps next time. Thanks again and I hope all went really well at Rail Days!

It is a little bit of a drive for you but next Saturday, June 7th, they are having Rail Days in Manassas, VA. There will be some dealers and exhibits. There will also be at least 3 HO module clubs with layouts there. Some of the club members are from Maryland. If you go, I'll be at the Potomac Module Club layout. A lot of us model the 50s.

Any HO Scale Modelers in the Bel Air, Maryland Area?
Posted by Freelance on Saturday, May 31, 2008 9:17 PM

Hi All,

I posted this message in the General Discussion section, but maybe this section is the better place for it.

I was just wondering if there were any HO scale modelers in the Bel Air, Maryland area. I'm trying to construct a free-lanced prototype layout set in the 1948 - 1952 era and would really like to have some input, or even help, from other modelers regarding the track plan, operation, and construction.

As it goes, I have a general idea of the route of the railroad, the space exists to build a portion of the route from Baltimore to Chambersburg, but refining the plan is where I'm having some trouble. I have a good portion of the benchwork complete so far but I'm feeling a little lost and, at times, overwhelmed by the whole thing.

If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks!
