I think a potato would make them look too uniform. Little triangular bits of sponges work really good. If your going to do trunks, paint them in with a brush first. (not the best picture...)
Call me silly (ok, silly!), but couldn't you cut a sponge, attach a small handle/back with scrap wood/balsa and use this?... just a thought....

I read in MR magazine somewhere about using potatoes to quickly and cheaply create backdrop trees. Anyone do this? If so, how? I found that creating a trunk and branches difficult in the potato w/o a stencil. I cut out the tree part, but found that it left an outline on my backdrop!
