I remember reading an article about a layout in Model Railroader in which nothing but code 100 was used. In the article, he stated, that once ballasted and scenicked, he could hardly tell the difference.

THANKS FOR YOUR OPINIONS . I THINK I WILL STICK TO CODE 100 BECAUSE IT APPEARS THAT ALL OF MY OLDER EQUIPMENT HAS THE DEEP FLANGES . I MAY SET UP A LOOP OF CODE 83 WITH A COUPLE OF TURNOUT TO SEE HOW IT WORKS OUT . WILL LET YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENS .       THANKS   RON

The only real place I can see that they may have trouble is on turnouts and crossovers.

I have some older (ca early '70s far as I can tell) Mantua locos with the 'pizza cutter' flanges on the pilot/trailing and tender wheels.  They're fine on c83 and will just barely make it on c70 (seriously, like .001 clearance netween the spikes and the flange.). The drivers on these locos *appear* to have been replaced with RP25 drivers.
