what do you all think?  the straight modules would be 2'x4' and would have 2 straight tracks that would connect with the curved ones.

so are there any problems with my thinking or planning?

That's certainly workable.  You will have a very basic oval shape though.  You might want to consider curving the straight tracks some before they get to the end of the "straight" modules.  That would look better.

You have a really interesting concept there.  I like the idea of the crossing / junction incorporated into the staging.  Will the interior "stub" peninsula be scenicked, hidden or ???

What a great layout and website! My layout is also modular and built with Sievers benchwork but not nearly as elaborate as yours.  I belong to two HO module groups and some of the members have all kinds of neat industries and yards for switching.

Check out this site for some more info on modules: http://www.fremo.org/inhalt_e.htm

The American modellers can be found under Fremo-USA.

I have a little experience with them, pay attention to the legs. If I were you I would go for a larger radius in HO.

Normally in most "conventional" mosdular layouts that you might want to interchange with, the modules are joined with a straight piece of sectional track (9" in HO, 5" in N).

You might want to add 4 1/2" of straight track at each edge to accomodate a 9" peice of sectional track.
