ADT,

If Train Lover 12's post bother you, then ignore it and move on to a post you like.  It's like having 500 TV stations...if one annoys you, change the channel, don't yell at the TV.  Remember your mother's advice, "If you don't have something nice to say.... My 2 cents [2c]

Given the competing demands on all of us, no matter what our age, I for one, am glad to see anyone interested in this great hobby.

As for those who've taken the time to help Train Lover or the 1000's of others on this forum, Thanks!

Train Lover12 is back with more questions?????????  See the thread "Benchwork" and see what this guy (Child) is all about.  He/She starts a thread then starts an entire new one after that thread has been exhausted and some of you treat him/her as a "serious newbie" not!!

I sincerely hope you all have better things to do than to respond to this individual with his/her generic childish questions. If i were a moderator I would probabaly have him/her banned.  Better to have been spammed than have this kid in this group.

I belong to the Boeing Employee RR Club-St Louis & we have a HO (see photos) & a N scale modular layouts.

You can ask at your LHS if there are any clubs or other model railroaders close to where you live that run modular layouts. You can model a lone module ( 6' or 4') or make it part of your own home layout. Our club runs 3 mainlines but I've seen others with 2 mains & even a On3 module with just one track.

Are there any model railroad clubs nearby that can help you?

There's a neet new concept of modular railroading called free-mo.

Here's a link to their site.

www.free-mo.org

You might find this style of modular railroading interesting.

Basically by jumping all over the place your confusing yourself. Just start small and go from there. With you being only 12 and not having a lot of money for your first layout the best advice I could give you is to start small. Look in the database and pick a very simple plan. Build it. Then add to it, make it grow as you find out what you like. As you state that you do not like flextrack and intend to use unitrack, if I were you I would ask your parents if they would let you have a 4x6 or a 4x8 piece of plywood to setup on and go from there. Modules are very hard to plan and really hard to build.

But anyway, good luck kid.

Hey Train lover 12

What is your thinking when you say modular? Do you want a small layout that comes apart? Or do you want to build a small piece of a layout where people get together and attach all their pieces with yours?

This is a link to njsntrak, website is under construction but there is some info there.

good luck

Public library. See if they have Model Railroader Magazine and some basic books on model railroading.  Or at the very least - look at the bottom of this page, and click on the link "Model Trains" on the line labelled "For newcomers". That will take you to this web page:

http://www.trains.com/trc/default.aspx?c=mt&id=1&fromfoot=1

Then you will learn enough to be able to ask more specific questions.

Nobody understands all. What specific things are you wondering about ?

 train lover12 wrote:

First : do you understand what a module is ? Think of a floor made out of large "tiles", where each "tile" has railroad tracks (and buildings etc) on it.

If there is a standard for how far back from the front edge the tracks will cross the right and left end of the "tile" (so you can put any tile next to any other tile, and the tracks will line up), then you have a modular layout.

So the depth of the tiles (e.g 18", 24 or 30" deep) and how far back from the front edge the tracks crosses the left and right side is the most critical thing - if you vary that too much, tracks on two neighbouring modules won't line up when you put them next to each other.

Length can be anything you feel confident about lifting, moving and transporting - one the good thing about modular setups is that each tile can be worked on separately. All the modules does not _have_ to have exactly the same length, as long as the tracks running across the left and right sides match up with tracks on the neighbouring modules.

But approximately 4 feet length is a good general goal to shoot for - short enough to carry or fit in a car for transport, long enough that you don't get a gazillion modules - because the potensial trouble spot is the join between the modules. If things don't line up 100% at these connection spots, you will get derailments.

If you want your modules to be able to link up with modules made by others, you need to have the ends of your modules line up with the ends of their modules.

This old post explains more:  http://www.trains.com/trccs/forums/89118/ShowPost.aspx

 Good luck.
