Using digital photos for background?
Posted by zeis96 on Tuesday, December 4, 2007 7:00 PM

Has anyone used their own photos for their background? I know some people use digital photos for fill-ins. I was thinking of using the photos instead of painting. I'd also like any tips on how you used yours. I know there are places that offer backgrounds like Sceniking and backdropwarehouse but I'd like to see about making my own. Any pictures would be a great help! Just to clarify I would be printing them myself or finding a place online to print them for me.

I use a program called huge pictures that I downloaded, but I can no longer find where I downloaded it from. It takes my pics and prints them on the inkjet any size I want. They piece together rather well. I usually edit them first. Here is a pic of Mt St Helen's I took and added to my scene. There are two painted scenes in front and then a foam carving. I will try to find the web site and post it later if I can

I used a photo I had taken of downtown Salida, Colorado and Tenderfoot mountain while on vacation a couple of years ago for a city scene on my layout.  I printed it on matte photographic paper (Kodak I think) which I bought from Comp USA when they used to exist around here.  I do not think any of the glossy or semi glossy papers would work as well.  I just printed it on my old Epson Color inkjet printer on three different pieces of paper since I wanted something wider than 11".  I already had a sky background that I had installed and painted on .060 styrene sheet, so I just cut sky away from my city image with an Exacto knife leaving all the buildings and mountains and than use spray adhesive to affix behind my city.  The seams are pretty much covered up by actual buildings on my layout. This works really good for me but of course it is only a small area not a full backdrop and I will have to admit there was a fair amount of trial and error involved but the end result was better than I expected.  Sorry I don't have a picture of it to post.
