Road Question??
Posted by izzy on Sunday, December 2, 2007 1:51 PM

I've done something different and I was wondering what my next step would be. I've placed 1/8" cork gasket material for my road base. I was thinking about using joint compound spread really thin over top of this. Would this be a good way to go or should I use styrene?

Definately, yes!

You could go either way, or you could go with Durhams water putty.

It's all good!

izzy,

That's EXACTLY the method that I've experimented with and will use on my layout.  The cork roll sheeting I have is made by Contact (the shelf liner people) and comes with a peel-away back.  I filled in the "voids" of the cork with thin layers of vinyl spackle, being sure to sand inbetween layers.  I found 2-3 applications/sandings to be sufficient.  I painted the surface with Pollyscale Grimy Black.

izzy, be sure to post pics when you have something to show. Smile [:)]

Izzy, I think it's easier to get a realistic road surface by working the joint compound or water putty than it is trying to rough up styrene.  Just my opinion, good luck.
