I actually took a closer look at the tower after I got it home, and the signs on the tower that I want to remove are actually stickers that I should be able to carefully remove.

try some decal setting solution on the lettering then rub with a soft rag after 30 seconds or so.  I really prefer Walthers Solvaset for this over the Microscale products.

Have you tried metholated spirits? It works wonders on rolling stock, so I would think it will work on your kit if its a styrene, or plastic.

Removing lettering

I just got one of the Walthers built up interlocking towers.  How do I remove the lettering (the big BX and the numbers) so that I can add my own?
