Running on SantaFe tracks
Posted by hwolf on Saturday, September 8, 2007 2:42 PM
My railroad is fashioned in the northern part on New Mexico in the late 1950's. I am running all SantaFe equipment. My question is. Did any other railroad ( UP,SP, Rio Grande etc) run trains on these tracks during that period? I would love to get another railroad on those tracks.

I can't think of a time or reason when another railroad would run a train on AT&SF track in northern New Mexico. If anything, it was the AT&SF that would have occasional detours on SP trackage further south due to snow blockades. With the exception of the SP lines in the south, the AT&SF in the north was the only other major road in the state. The Rio Grande didn't have a very good connection with the AT&SF except for the narrow gauge lines up near Chama. The Rock Island did cross the AT&SF and may have used AT&SF tracks in case of derailment but this would have been rare. I'm afraid the area you're modeling was pretty much 100% Santa Fe 100% of the time. OTOH, it's your railroad, so you can run any trains you want and the MR police won't come knocking on your door. Smile [:)]

Unfortunately, your choice of location limits you to Santa Fe.  The Rio Grande and Santa Fe were bitter rivals who fought drawn out court battles over territory, particularly the right to build over Raton Pass and through the Royal Gorge.

The only chance of anything other than Santa Fe running through northern New Mexico would be a natural calamity along the Southern Pacific's Sunset Route to the south or the Union Pacific's Transcontinental line to the north.

There were Boy Scout jamboree trains that ran during that time.  I've seen pictures of them on the joint line headed south out of Denver.  I don't know where they branched off after that.  I suppose some heading to California or Arizona would have taken that route.

I disagree with cacole, all UP streamliners detouring to the south would have gone through the D&RGW Moffat Tunnel or through the Royal Gorge so they could meet back up with their normal trackage ASAP in Salt Lake City.

With the parade of AT&SF trains passing through where do you find in your schedule to fit in foreign stuff?
