You'l soon have plenty of spares when you start curving it to make curves!

The ties are made with cutouts so they can theoretically be placed under rail joiners. Someone recently asked about these extra bits of tie material, not understanding they were made to be cut off and not knowing how to make their work "in place".
Why would you want to cut them off? The rail joiners slide right into the grooves between the base of the rail and the top of the ties and you don't have to go back and fill in the gap with spare ties. Isn't this what they were designed for or am I missing something here?
