need help with track sizing and book references

first of all happy thanksgiving everyone. i'm new to the hobby and have purchased some books for information. i also joined the local model railroading club. anyway heres the question. i've been using atlas right track software to try and devise a track plan to my space and needs. when i do a return track it shows me using 4' to make a half circle with 22" radius track. is this correct? does anyone know the width needed for a half circle of 24,22,18 and 15" radius curves? is there a book out there that has all these? also needing info for roads to ho scale. what is width of two lane road or highway? also books for this if anyone knows of any would help

22 " curves will give you an 44" half curve 4' is 48" pleanty of room go with 22 " with two inches left over.A good book to start with is "an ho layout from start to fini***he one I have is a vary old one By KLUMBACH(spelling) I'am sure there is an newer one out,but anyway It is GOOD PLACE TO START.

Yes, a half circle which is part of a return loop requires a width of double the radius plus a couple of inches. Track radius is measured to the center of the track so you have to allow an extra inch or two for the width of the track and clearance. The best book for planning is "Track Planning for Realistic Operation" by John Armstrong.

Agree with the above posts. The book by Armstrong is excellent. He has another one out to go along with it "The Classic Layout Designs of John Armstrong". They go hand in hand.

If you are using diesels with 6 axels or steam engines, you may want to stay away from 18" radius tracks whever possible. 15" track is real tight, and should only be used in yards where you dont have those 80' cars parked and no locomotives will go.

One thing to keep in mind is that track radii are measured Center to Center. So you actually need about 46 inches for that 22 inch radius. In planning you should probably add 2 inches to what you think a half circle will require.. That is, 24 inch radius, 50 inches for a full turnaround..

Agree with others about using 6 axle diesels on 18" radius.. Not always the best idea.. Some will negotiate it, others won't.. Also, third, fourth, or fifth the recommendation of the John Armstrong books published by Kalmbach..
