Printing from XtraCad
Posted by lstella on Tuesday, August 16, 2005 3:37 PM
I like using XtraCad but have run into a problem when printing. The "table edge and margin rulers" print as they should but the layout details including the track are not legible. Any of you XtraCad users out there know what the problem might be? Also, does anyone know of an XtraCad Users Forum?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I just started using XtrkCad and didn't really have any issues printing, but I just have a small layout that fit on a page. Is yours a bigger layout? What size are you trying to print it at?
Kids are great for many reasons. Not the least of which is to buy toys "for them."

I've noticed track near the edges doesn't print when it is across a page boundary! Haven't found a solution. Haven't seen your problem though.

I have only been printing a small 3' x 6' section of the layout at a scale of 8. It initially printed correctly, including track, etc., during my "learning stage" of the program. The problem of illegible track began in later attempts at printing so I think I must have inadvertantly disabled that capability. I am stumped at knowing how to correct it.

I can answer one question...
Allen, when you print on multiple sheets you can select on option (or maybe it is the default and you can unselct it) to not print what is in the margins. This lets you tape, glue, staple, or whatever, the pages together with no overlap, and evertyhting is in the right place, just with litte gaps. If you print the other way, you have to cut the margins off the pages to get proper alignment, but it will all be there.

It is the "Ignore Page Margins" box on the print menu page.

Istella, what does the "illegible" track look like? What happens if you just print 1 page at 1:1, or print the snapshot?

There is an XtraCad forum in Yahoo! groups.

The illegible track appeared as a very faint set of parallel lines, even when printed with a new toner cartridge. But by trial and error, I have now been able to get satisfactory prints by setting the graphics tab on my printer set-up menu to dark rather than normal and the "ties" selection under the XtraCad Options, Display menu to Outline. Thanks again for your interest.

The other option is to print it to a bitmap, and then print it with Microsoft paint and see if that helps. That's usually what I do. Then again I don't print a large layout either though.

What I have noticed is when you print a snapshot of the whole layout the track does come out light, but I would not have called it illegible. I printed a few pages full size, and they seemed like they would be easy to work with.

It drove me crazy at first, but after reviewing the demo examples a few times it got easier and easier. There are still things that happen that I don't understand, and things that I am sure could be done better, but I am getting what I am after. A 3-D view would be nice, but I'd rather spend the money elsewhere. Every now and then I check elevations whaere things cross to make sure I haven't whacked something, and spen some time "visualizing" what the contours should look like. I guess I won't really know 'til the construction starts!

Thanks for the correction baldwinjl. No other problems with XTrkCad so far that the learning curve won't solve.
