N Scale Sectional Track - Curve Radius
Posted by Benjamin Maggi on Thursday, February 17, 2005 9:24 AM
Does any manufacturer make curved track in sections that are tighter than 9 3/4 inches in radius? I am planning on a trolley layout that has a 9 3/4 loop and inside a loop around 7 3/4" radius. I can use flextrack, and have before, but for ease and smoothness would like to know if smaller stuff is available. I don't have a walthers catalog handy, so I cannot check, but brand name isn't important. Nor is detail. Even European track with metric measurements are okay, as long as the curve fits inside the 9 3/4" loop. Thanks. Ben

Flex track would probably be the way to go--I think 9-3/4" is the narrowest standard curve in N. Flex is a better bet anyhow, for tight curves.

The smallest I've seen is 9-3/4 and I don't think there's anything smaller.

There used to be 7-1/2" radius available from an European company. I don't think Walthers has it anymore.

A search of sites specializing in European trains might locate it.

I tried to sell my two cents worth, but no one would give me a plug nickel for it.

I don't have a leg to stand on.

Thanks. I will check with a European importer that I know. Ben

Kato Unitrack has a relatively new piece that's smaller than 9 3/4, but not by much! Here's the info from their website.

Peter

20-170 216mm (8 9/16") Radius 45º Curve Track [4 pcs]
• 8 pieces make a circle.
Warning: This radius is too tight for 6-axle locomotives.
We recommend it for industrial trackage or trolley routes.

20-171 216mm (8 9/16") Radius 15º Curve Track [4 pcs]
• 24 pieces make a circle.
Warning: This radius is too tight for 6-axle locomotives.
We recommend it for industrial trackage or trolley routes.
