I just installed a liftup section on my layout and had considered something like the article. I did not go that route, however, because my actual lift section is only four inches wide (single track) with a two foot stand between my staging yard and the rest of the layout. Instead I 3D printed some hinges that sit taller than commercial hinges, so I didn't have to use a wood block and they appear quite nicely.
If I were doing a wider lift up section, I'd might consider something like the article, but for my application, top hinges were easier to deal with.
