Scene Table Divider Ideas ?

Looking for ideas on the best materials to use to split the middle of a 6 foot wide x 12 foot section into 2 - 3 x 12 sections The layout opens up wider after the 12 foot length so I need to end the divider somehow. I have access all around so the width is not an issue whatsoever. I want to keep the 6 foot piece in tact but just divide it to add twice the scene and interest. The train will cross through openings in the divider a number of times while on the 6 foot x 12 foot section.
I was thinking of placing a 2 foot high x 12 foot section out of plywood with 2 sides of Luan and then painting backdrop on each Luan side. One problem is how to end this divider "naturally" at the far end so I don't end up with a 2 foot piece of wood standing out like a sore thumb on the table. I suppose I could slope it down or ..... something. Would I be better to use foam or the plywood ? or ? I was also thinking of cutting the top of the divider ragged to make mountain peaks or .... something.

The easiest way is to have a 2'x2'frame with masonite on both sides. You can paint it sky blue, add mountains and scenery. I would round the ends using a material such as fiberglass, plastercloth, sculptured foam (my favorite chice)or something similar. At the one end you could taper it down using a descending mountain. I've seen it both ways and they are both acceptable. The only problem with crossing thru is that it is so narrow it may not look realistic.

Im having the same trouble! How to end this divider, I ve looked through 2 years of MR and not one layout has a pic of the divider ending!

As a club layout's benchwork was built, we stood 2' x 8' half sheets of 3/4-inch particle board on edge and bolted it between the center peninsula's framing, and then painted scenes on both sides. We used 3/4 inch thick material so there would be no warpage or need for reinforcement of any type. The layout framing is 2x4s, and we used carriage bolts to fasten the divider between them. We then fashioned a display shelf out of a 1" pine board with strips glued on the bottom to straddle the divider, and a single track on top

To maximize the divider or back drop, mount it on the diagonal rather than straight across. It will make each half of your 6 x 12' appear bigger than it actually is.
