Ho scale roof top details
Posted by frisco kid on Wednesday, March 5, 2008 1:47 PM
Hi Ladies and Gentlemen. I have recently put together seven or eight DPM and RIX Smallville commercial buildings. I was looking thru the bible (Walthers Catalog) for roof top details and some of the Kalmbach books. I have decided to buy ready made. Who are your favorite suppliers for roof top details???? Thanks for your help!!!

Read Art Curren's articles and book on kitbashing and you'll see wonderful roof top details made from stuff you might have sitting in your scrap box -- or even your recycling bin!

I was just looking at the March Walthers flyer last night.  They have some Bar Mills roof vents on sale right now.

It's not exactly rooftop, but I found that adding fire escapes really does a lot:

This is "Baldy's Barber Shop" from Model Power, viewed from the rear.  The fire escapes are Walthers "Vintage," as opposed to the modern ones.  Tichy also makes a fire escape, but I think it's too wide.  You could easily cut it down, though.  The Walthers ones are more expensive, but they do look much nicer.  The Walthers ones are on sale right now.

It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

My prior post was incomplete and not helpful.   More modelers should know the interesting line of details from Sodders Enterprises,

http://www.soddersenterprises.com/ and the following illustrations are from their website.  I have seen their items for sale at Tranfest from Greenway.

such as their roof top doorway.

drain pipe set

Cyclone vent

and other vents

roof top air conditioner

and roof top tank

skylight

Dependent on era nearly every building of multiple stories used to have a water tank on the roof.  It was there to feed the fire sprinklers.  Driving through Chicago on I-94 a couple of weeks ago I noted how few are left.  At one point I considered starting a model supply business of roof top details incudling all sizes and styles of tanks.  I was going to call it "Tanks for the Memories".

My thanks to dknelson for recommending Sodders Enterprises. I ordered some rooftop details from them and they look great. PLUS, how many companies will hand write a thank you on the invoice? I'll do MORE business with them in the future.
