The foam is used as a moisture barrier\insulation layer under vinyl siding...since San Diego never gets cold, I doubt you'd find any insulation board.
The special order idea will work, you might end up paying a bit more form it though.

I know it would be a little bit of a drive for you in San Diego but it depends on how much you want it. I live in Lancaster and it is the closes place I could find to get foam.

Success! It's only in 2' x 8' but that's alright since it will be easier to put into my SUV. And they have a nice range of thicknesses. I will keep looking around here for another few weeks and then I'll make the trip.
