Somebody make the visions STOP!
Posted by vsmith on Sunday, April 29, 2007 10:50 PM

OK I went to the Orange Empire trolley museum this weekend and while there, what happens? they rolled out of the trolley barn a vintage Los Angeles RR MOW derreck car (and of course I didnt have my camera) which if you seen it is quite a unique looking animal.

I only had to glance at it, and I saw the vision, a HLW flatcar, a Mack cab, and a LGB Toytrain cranecar body....ahhh!!! now I HAVE to build it or the visions wont go away, so a little experimenting today and...

It will be gas not electric, hence the readiator, and I'll use 2 A/C bricks like my other models...more to comeBig Smile [:D]

I wish I had my camera with me on Saturday. This is a similar car from the Illinois RR Museum:

Just so you know I'm not completely off the rails...

Hi Vic

OK that's it your grounded till the visions stopSmile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Will that doQuestion [?]

Seriously that's one interesting looking beast

If you move the cab as far forward  as it will go and the crane as far back as it will go  will you be able to lower the boom without shortening it.

Are you going to put out riggers on it so it doesn't tip when lifting.

John

If anything I'll shorten the boom, the LARR derrick car at the museum has a relatively short boom, also no outriggers are on it either.

Hi Vic

That's Interesting wonder how they stopped it tipping over unless it had a very low lifting capacity.

Looking at the picture of the real one am I right in thinking it has a half cab??

John

I dont recall the proto having outriggers, but according to the museum website, its only a 5 ton derrick, not a very large capacity. Of course streetcar lines dont deal with heavy equipment in general. Yes, the example derrick in the pic has a half cab, but the proto has a almost full cab and in fact is raised up pretty high. Here's a pic of a similar LARR MOW unit.

FYI heres the museum website

Vic.....your one sick man and need to see the Dr. for not having a camera at any RR viewing or near any tracks. I do hope the Dr. does not get the men in white coats after you for your visions! Big Smile [:D]

But with your craftmanship I know it would come out right! Good luck and it is starting to take shape Yeah!! [yeah]

Hi Vic

Thanks for the link very interesting will have to study further when time is on my side.

I am sure I have seen G trams / electric rail cars like the ones on the web site but cannot remember where, including a maintenance one of some sort.

With some of the stuff you keep coming up with may be you should consider a short intracity line as well as the main line railroadQuestion [?]
