Train Layout at The Living Desert
Posted by trestrainfan on Sunday, April 29, 2007 1:49 PM

I enjoy watching the G scale layout at The Living Desert in Palm Desert, CA. I visit several times a year. I have family in the area and I've been a member of The Living Desert for many years, well before they added the trains.

I'm not sure how the layout compares to other garden railway layouts as I really haven't seen many other layouts, but to me it seems very extensive and the active group of volunteers is continually adding to and expanding the layout.

Has the layout ever been the subject of a magazine article? If yes, what magazine and issue?

 Thanks.

I don't know of any magazine articles about Living Desert's railroad.  However it has been the subject of my camera.  For those who have never seen this amazing place, here are a few photos.  Enjoy.

Be careful trestrainfan. It was a layout not nearly as cool as this one, in Cypress Gardens that got me hooked on G scale model railroading.  They had one loop running up, over and around a deep gorge of running water. I was completely taken in by it. Now I have my own layout, and it continues to grow.

trestrainfan,

Garden Railways hasn't featured this railroad to the best of my knowledge. However, it's on our list of permanent railroads, which is always online, and runs in the magazine about once per year.

Thanks for the replies and photos. Seeing a nice layout does get me interested, but I live in an apartment at the moment, so no room for a garden railway now. I would like to get into it at a future date after buying a house.

Nice! I will be spending some days at Palm Springs this coming weekend and planning on taking the family to see that cool looking layout. I am a newbie at G scale and have started my own layout indoors (suspended) for now. I will mostlikely extend the layout to my back yard some time in the future, but since I have a 2 year old, the outside layout will have to wait for now.
