Glad I am not the only one who enjoys watching the train go around from a crt screen. I used a X 10 security camera setup. A small color camera with a wireless llnk connecting the components together. I removed the components and installed them in an Aristo FA unit. Unless you look close the camera hole in not noticable. In the order of an 1/8 in . This required the modification of the lens housing. It had to be cut back so that the lens is right up front behind the opening.
It took people a while to realize that the pictures were live and where they were coming from when set up for public display . The camera eye is set half way down from the headlight. It gives a realistic view going down the track, esecially passing a train the opposite direction.

I don't have a Garden Railway YET! Still in my mind I keep getting drawn back to this Forum and buying the Magazine. I have seen a special camara mounted to a car at a train show, geat for scale speed effect. The club was Central Ohio S gaugers. You could E-Mail a member to find out what they did at www.cosg.org

That looked great and I bet you had a lot of fun. I have done a little bit of video shooting in my day. I have put the camcorder on a flat car that was placed at different locations on the train, front , middle, and rear. Also facing forward and to the rear, but the most fun I had was when I made a custom camera car. The micro camera is mounted on a gondola and it is made to look like cargo. The camera is angled to the side at about a 45 degree angle. This way you can have a view not unlike a passenger. The camera is about a 70 dollar color camera that is only about a inch square I fit it in one of Bachmann's little wood crates. It is connected to a wireless T.V. transmitter that looks like a canvas covered cargo. The transmitter is matched with a recevier that can be hooked up to a TV. or a VCR. The trans-recevier pair only cost about 49 dollars and they all run on from 10- 12 volts. I have a small lead acid gel cel in the gondola attached. The picture is not bad, the broadcast system is for a staionary set up so there is sometimes a little static, but it looks very good for such a cheap set up.

Watch the center of gravity. I had a great video of the railroad until the camcorder got top heavy going around one curve. Looks funny while the camera topples to it's side.

Hobo- I did this video with the motion picture feature of my digital camera. You can only get 30 second video clips at a time on my camera. The entire video was produced using Windows Movie Maker. Check it out!!

I have a few tapes from folks who mount the camera on a flat car in front of the engine. Then they run the trains to fast. With tight curves and speed it makes for a nice roller coaster ride on BIG screen TV. Plus shows how bad of track work they have.[:I]

Hi Railfans,

Those are great video ideas, tried pushing flat car with camera mounted got great pictures of knees and a/c units. These suggestions will save time. Hope
to make Christmas Video this weekend.

Sounds like fun, may I suggest placing the camera in a gondola about 10 cars behind the engine. It will still pick up the sound but looks like your riding in the coupla of the caboose. Ho, run a flat car or gondola in front of camera car to see better. Keep camera all the way zoomed back for wide angel.
Get some footaged, I'd love to see it sometime.[^]

Hi everyone,
I just tried this on my garden railroad,I took my small vhs video camera and strapped it on top of a box car,behind the engine.I have a sierra sound system installed in the engine,which by the way sounds about as real as it gets,the results were fantastic! Now I can sit and watch my trains run thru the yard on the TV. It did make the boxcar a little top heavy,next time I am going to use a flat car with a brick on it,to get the lens over the roof of the engine,if you havent tried this do so it looks great.
