The newer 4-6-0 Annie (has metal side rods) will pull more than some of the older 4-6-0's.
The older 4-6-0's were the ones prone to stripping gears, the Annie is much better.
Even LGB Moguls wil strip gears!!
Biggest problem for making gears strip is poor electrical track power. I always add pickups to the tenders on steamers and even use the first car with power pickups wired to the tender/engine. Much better running train with this method.
Battery operations do not have this power pickup issue.

Like i said I THINK, after reviewing a back issues Feb/Apr 2006, it did list tractive effort( DRAW BAR PULL ). one in pounds and one in once's. So He's not cutting out the data it just require's READING. Thank you for the correction. BTW where can we see a GG1 pulling 118 cars ?
The head is gray, hands don't work , back is weak, legs give out, eyes are gone, money go's and my wife still love's Me.
Bill I use R3 curves all my track is LGB, I`ve taken on board your comments so will try a few more coaches. The main reason for asking about this is my first consolidation would only pull 4 coaches it stripped the gears 4 times in less than 6 months it spent more time in Bachmann repair than with me.
The last straw was when it was returned to me the courers dropped it and I had to have a new on from Backmann touch wood i`ve had no problems with this one
Common Wisdom is that unless one heck of a lot of weight is added to a loco adding too many cars will simply cause the loco's wheels to slip on the track, not bind up.
Overall there are several factors to consider before being able to give you an answer. How much do the cars weigh, do they have plastic or metal wheeels, and do they by any chance have roller bearing trucks. You said that your layout is flat, but how sharp are the curves. All of these thing make a difference on how many cars you can pull with an engine.

It all depend's on luck. I have a BACHMANN 4-6-0 that I added 3Lb's (just over 1 Kilo) of lead in the boiler over the drive wheels and I have pulled 4 js and a 4 frieght cars ( all I had at the time ) up a 2-3% grade without any problem's. BTY This engine has been in my collection since day one ( Nov 1989 ) and it still run's.

Uh, mister beckett, um, all these years arguing with the editors over such mundane items as volatge, current and drawbar pull, plus wheel gauges, and one would think after winning that argument several years ago and including such in the original reviews submitted..........
twotone, I pull 20 freight cars behind mt B-man 2-8-0, I pull 5 jackson sharp cars behind my 4-4-0. I do not have a 2-6-0. I also have pulled 10 freight cars behind my 4-4-0 with no trouble. all of my cars have metal wheels and most have bearings, These are very good locomotives.

I need to know the maximun load a Bachmann 4-6-0 and 2-8-0 can pull the 2-8-0 pulls Jackson sharp coaches the 4-6-0 is frieght. I do not want to strip the gears by over loading the locos .
My layout is almost flat no gradiants as such.
