Garden RR question - looking for one to visit in AZ
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 28, 2007 6:30 PM
OK folks, need some help on a conspiracy...

Wife and I are buying a new home with lots of backyard space (wooded), she has graciously given me lots of space for an O Gauge RR in the basement, but the woods are calling... BUILD IT, THEY WILL COME... its just begging for a Garden RR to be interlaced among the trees.  I have mentioned this and her response, 'Yes dear, and if you do that it it will be considered grounds for divorce.'  I say its because she hasn't seen one in action!

So here's the plan...

We are planning a trip to AZ this summer and I figure if I can find one around the Grand Canyon, Hoover River Blockage, Flagstaff region I may be able to swing by and trick her into viewing one! Wink [;)]

Thanks,
Brent

Hello Brent,

I know you are coming up to York in April, but just to give you a heads up there is a GRR show coming up this weekend in York. Friday, and Saturday, open to the public both days. You should come up if you can get the Mrs. to let you. It would be great to meet you.

Colin,
Thanks for the invite.  I saw your post on the O-gauge forum and if I can make it I will!  Not sure what fun filled plans she has for me though! Wink [;)]  LOL!

If your wife is anything like most wives, they really don't like to be tricked (especially on vacation). All the AZ layouts I have seen are in the southern part of the state. Maybe you should concentrate on a good example closer to home. Jim Strong's Woodland Railway is one of the best (featured awhile ago in GR). My club frequently has operating sessions there (I'm sure you could drop in on one). Its just on the southeast side of DC. You can see some pics at http://www.wvmgrs.org/ click on "What We Do" on the left menu, then "Operating Sessions" in the center, then "More photos" underneath the Woodland Railway castle.

Brian,
LOL!  She wouldn't see it as a trick really.  She is just as into trains as I am, but she won't admit it.  My most recent purchase was BECAUSE of her!  We were at a LHS on my b-day and she saw an MTH C&O Streamlined Hudson, as soon as she saw it she said, 'You have to have that on your layout... you should buy it!'  Then she realized what she said and just smiled, 'Of course it will cost you a new sofa!'  LOL!  She has a great sense of humor, of course buying the engine resulted in the purchase of 7 streamlined passenger cars too!

I think her reservation about GRR is that it will become addictive to her and she would be forced to admit she is a train addict too...

I've known her for 2 years now and my collection has doubled in size since we got married last June!

But thanks for the info!  I will definitely look into it... btw - are you aware of a layout in Ellicott City?  I was told about it today while at the LHS?  I'll have to drop the owner an email and see if he can give the GRR owner my info...

Brent

I have a large garden railroad in my front yard 30 miles north of Baltimore, just off of I 95 that you would be welcome to bring your wife to see.  There is also 2 garden layouts located in the Belair area.  If your interested e-mail me

Try contacting these folks - http://azbigtrains.org/members%20layouts.htm

I was not aware of any GRR's in the Ellicott City area. That's more the territory of the Mason Dixon guys. I do know of the folks up in Bel Air as they have an open house in the spring. I also forgot about Richard Weatherby's RR in the woods (Fallston, Md) - http://www.mdlsrs.com/MarylandCentral.html and Paul Bottino (who posts here) has another woodland railroad in Delaware - http://www.paulbottino.com/gscale.html
