No, no, mate not al all. You will pick power and commands up through the wheels from the track and an internal battery sometimes gives you standing sounds or continuity when you lose power.

You will also have a separate connection for a sound trigger, if you look closely you will see a minute whistle and bell.

I am not very good at these things and i would not attempt to put one in a loco. What i did do was to put one in a trailer and using LGB kuggel wheels, i got the whole thing to work quite well.

Will this thing work with the LGB G scale...The direction on these things assume that everyone is a pro.  This looks like to me a wireless sound system.  You just put the speaker in a car and his the button on the remote for sound?

Is it a steam engine that you have, if so what about a powered sound tender.

LGB sound magnets are cheap and easily placed between the rails, you would probably only need two, one for the bell and one for the horn placed in opposite attitude.

Those 6000 series sound units are pretty good but it is a bit harder to make them work off sound magnets and you can't get most of the sounds to work at all, unless you go to MTS. You will need a special kind of reed switch and there's not many of them around.

You will need the triggers and magnets if you run on analog and want to have the extra sounds on automatically. You can't have just the whistle & bell without the chuff with this unit. You do have a manual volume control so you could just turn them right down.

If you just want a whistle and bell there are several manufacturers of stand alone sound systems that would generate these and other sounds some triggered by the train and others by by a push button, MRC sound station has several sounds all controlled by push buttons for example. Get a copy of Garden Railways and browse the adverts and the net too looking for sound modules.

At this stage I would think twice about sound to a new addiction to the family I know its nice to be able to have sounds. But a new baby may not like it. Think of the problem if it puts him off the hobby later on.

LGB sound

I am new to the hobby and just bought an LGB toy train set for my son to be in.  He will be born in 3 months.  I built a lay out about a foot down from the roof in his room and have the train all hooked up great.  The thing is the sound feature stinks.  Just a whoosh sound over and over...boring.  I am looking into the 650001 sound unit but the instruction on LGB stink as well... at least for a newbee...My question is I have a 20212 loco.  If I purchase the 650001 and hook it to the loco will I also need a trigger (65012) and magnets (17050) to ring bells and whistles?  And also can I turn off the whoosh sound on the 650001 unit and only trigger the bells and whistle sound with the magnet?  Or is there a better way with a sound car?  This kind of stuff gets really expensive...$170 or so just for a bell and whistle! Hope someone can explain to a newbee.
