Nice tip! When I "break" ground next spring, I'll do just that.

I took an old grass edger,cutting off the cutting blade leaving just the star wheel on a pole,You lay out your track and simply roll it along both sides of the track at the width you want for your ballast,the wheel leaves a nice cut in the ground,move the track away and hoe out your ballast ditch.
