Looking for Plans
Posted by railstop on Sunday, January 14, 2007 8:39 AM
Hi, I am new to the Trains forums, but definatly not new to trains. tell me if I have posted to the wrong forum. I am fiddling with the idea of scratchbuilding a 1 1/2" scale or larger SD70M or newer EMD loco. Does anyone know where I can find plans for such a task? Other ideas have been to build a DRGW diesel loco. thanks for any helpThumbs Up [tup]

I presume by 1 1/2 inch scale you mean 1:8? Locos at this size are normally refered to as "the Grand Scales" by friends of mine -because that is roughly how much you need to spend.... Assuming you have the means (and engineering shop) to build this then you should be able to scale a drawing from available photos -which is what I do. Having seen and rode on locos of this size I would recommend Aluminium as a base working material -due to the fact that you really require a few good friends to enable you to re-rail your loco...

thanks for the info and advice. I had planned on using aluminum for as much as I can. this is going to be a unit that may possibly never see rails (unless I get more land). I just want to see what I can do with this project, see if it can lead to other projects in this scale. I know I can use pictures and models, but hoping theres some place I can get Drawings from to cut down on time.

My advice is to find a club that does1/8th scale and listen for a few weeks, watch and learn. Then If you still want to build this monstrous locomotive, go ahead, and while you are there build a trailer (as low to the ground as humany possible) to move it to and from the club. So you can have our loco and run it too! Good luck and if you don't like it you could sell it to a short line somewereBig Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]
