Derrick, LOVE the idea of a place just to chat.  It is about time that someone created this.  I was just about to, but you beat me to it.  Good Job.

Perhaps there needs to be some clearly defined rules on what exactly "chat, info and ideas" are in order to stay on topic.  We can't stay on topic if we dont' know what the topic is.  Are we only to discuss roundhouses and activities pertaining to them, or is it open forum for whatever pops into mind railroad related or not?   Questions questions.

I wasn't aware there had to be a topic to "chat" to use your own words.

Well, does anybody like to share some info? I'm just wondering if anybody created an HO scale loco with working headlights, lighted # boards, class. lights, and beacon lights?

Why would anybody on this forum want to build an HO locomotive?

With any luck this thread will be nuked early, before the name calling and bad blood starts up.

Right, I'm out of here lest I become an instigator of more posting.

not to continue this more than is necessary...  I'm just browsing the Garden RR forums (thinking about convincing my dad that the money spent is worthwile.... he thinks its just glorified playing with trains)

Derrick Moore - HO Scale, N Scale, and (to a degree) Lionel and American Flyer are all taked about in the Model Railroader General Discussion forum - though if youhave more specific questions about the Lionel/Flyer stuff, the Classic Trains forum would probably be your best bet.

To the rest of you guys - perhaps I'll be around more in ths spring (if I can get my dad to go for the idea of a garden rr).  Also, I wouldn't be too hard on Derrick - I think he's relatively new (and a little lost).

Do or do not. There is no "try". --Yoda

Wouldn't dream of it, it's just that we've been here so many times and the management always have to get involved. It's easier talking trains with the odd - short - drift off topic.

I'm looking out the back door and the CJ and M railroad is under 10" of hard , frozen snow . I did try to plow it when it fell last week but I got to it too late and it was already solid . How about you ?

Dan,

He's right, it is glorified playing with trains!

He just can't imagine how much fun, how educational, what a friendship builder, what a self esteem enhancer it can be.

Look at all the math involved in getting things to scale, the grades to the correct percentage, figuring how fast to run because the model can go 180 scale mph, but the real thing can barely do 60!     Think about how you will need to develop problem solving skills in order to get it done and working.   Think how the girls will be impressed that "You did all that?"   Consider how good you (and he) will feel when you have it flawlessly running.   You will make friends both here on the forum, in a possible GRR club in your area, and in folks you get to help you with the heavy work!   You will also gain a rudimentary education in practical electronics!

GO FOR IT!

I guess i worded it wrong then - he thinks of it as the kind of playing with trains that most (all) of us did when we were younger -- cheap plastic stuff on plastic rails that runs off of D-Cell batteries.  Much like the ~12 year old Bachmann "Big Hauler" that we set up under the christmas tree.

I think the biggest turn-off for him is that the G-Scale locos are extraordinarily expensive.... (then again, i think he was looking @ a live-steam loco...)

He's not one of the "tinkering" types - he'd rather have it "done right" the first time and then never do anything with it afterwards, save for watch it run.

You get a lotta self-respect/estem building from seeing that steam loco kit you made run flawlessly... for about 5 minutes til the running gear on both sides falls offWhistling [:-^] (I don't wanna talk about it....)

btw - I don't need girls - already got one Smile [:)]... and she thinks I'm off my rocker for playing with trains, but she likes the gimmicks* that they have (smoke...)

*I'm completely out of my element here - I own/am amassing HO equipment.  Though the prospect of a live-steam garden RR has always intrigued me.  I just need a back yard in which I can get a ~5 mile loop in (with a passing siding) and then an Atlantic (anyone know what used steam goes for these days?**)... and the OK from insurers to have a boiler running @ 300 PSI.

** and yes, I'm joking,  a 1:1 loco would be a bit extreme...
