Vat faux water question
Posted by FJ and G on Monday, November 6, 2006 7:25 AM
I'm building a vat to go on a flatcar I built for my 7/8n2 line.  I want water to go inside the vat, you know casting resin (from Michaels). The water will only fill the top portion of the vat with about 1/8 or 1/4 so I don't want clear water; I want to color the water. You know, to hide the real depth.

Two questions:

1. What is the color of water? Black, brown, blue?

2. Can I use food coloring to mix in the casting resin?

Thanks.

Water is the color combination of what is underneath it, what the sun is refracting thru it and reflections of it's surroundings.
For your thought you may just want to paint the area under and around where the resin is going, (the inside of the barrel) black/brown then pour the resin in on top of it.
Or you could pour the resin then paint the top of it to give the illusion of the color being reflected thru it. Most reasin take a special pigment to color them without disrupting the chemical reaction that causes them to set up.

Hope that helps you.

Thanks, Jack. I'll do that. Black will be the color. I'll post when it's completed.

Black doesn't sound like a very good colour, could be abit depressing. Here in the tropics the water is usually a beautiful blue green.
